Not Godzilla… maybe Mothra?
So, Akinori Iwamura held his introductory press conference today. *****, I should be able to spell his name without double-checking four times by now.) He read an opening statement in English, which is becoming vogue with our Japanese imports. Check out the following for more in-depth discussions:

Iwamura eager to get started with D-Rays

Aki speaks
Here’s the three things I took from his press conference:
First, he watches 24. That already pushes him up into the stratosphere on the Scott-o-Meter.
Secondly, this notion I keep hearing that the D-Rays are most excited about the versatility that he brings because he can play so many different positions. Look, I understand, its great that he can play anywhere. I’d love to have a team of 14 guys that can play each position. But, come on, instead of busing the guy around the infield and outfield like he’s a senior on his way to bingo night, how about just say "He’s our third baseman, he’s going to play third base, and the only reason we’ll move him is if he doesn’t take to the position in America, or an injury elsewhere leaves us with no other option."
Third, the following line from the St. Pete Times article:
Regardless of where he lines up, Iwamura plans to play with flair. One of his first things he did after signing with Tampa Bay was order a glove made with alligator leather.
I like it! Bring some personality to the ballpark! I think that this guy is going to be the real deal, and the Rays might have gotten a steal here.
